Wine subscriptions in Spain: how they work

Wine arrives at your door every month. The interesting question isn't whether that's convenient — it's whether you end up drinking better.

What a subscription is actually for

Not convenience. You can buy wine anywhere. What a subscription gives you, when it's done properly, is a decision made by someone who knows more than you — repeatedly, so your taste develops.

Left alone, most of us buy the same three bottles forever. That's the problem being solved.

The models you'll come across

Broadly, subscriptions fall into three shapes. Each suits a different person:

  • You pick from a catalogue. Really a shop with a monthly invoice. Fine if you already know what you want — and then you probably don't need the subscription.
  • Everyone gets the same box. Simple to run, cheap to produce, and it ignores whether you drink reds or whites.
  • Chosen for you, based on your taste. More work behind the scenes, and the only one that can actually teach you something.

There's no universally right answer — but be clear which one you're buying, because they're priced as though they're the same thing.

Questions worth asking before you subscribe

  • Do they explain the choices? A bottle with no explanation is just a bottle.
  • Can you cancel easily? If cancelling is hidden, that tells you what the business relies on.
  • Do they recommend brands or styles? Brand-led recommendations often mean commercial agreements.
  • What happens if you dislike one? The answer reveals whether personalisation is real or decorative.

How ours works

CualEsTuVino is the third kind. You answer five questions about what you like and eat; we choose one or two bottles a month and send them with a card explaining what each is and why it suits you.

  • Silver — one bottle a month.
  • GOLD — two bottles a month.
  • No commitment. Cancel from your account; it takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for.
  • Delivery within Spain.

You don't choose the bottles — we do. That's not a limitation, it's the mechanism. If you already knew what to order, you'd want a shop, not a subscription.

Is it worth it?

Honestly: it depends on how you drink. If you buy the same Rioja every Friday and are happy, save your money. If you'd like to drink better and don't know where to start, this is a cheaper education than a wine course and considerably more enjoyable.
